Wiebes opens women's Tour de France with victory and yellow jersey

Lorena Wiebes demonstrated her sprinting dominance by winning the opening stage of the women's Tour de France in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Dutch rider for SD Worx crossed the finish line first, securing the coveted yellow jersey. Wiebes outpaced Kim Le Court-Pienaar and Demi Vollering in a challenging finale.

The stage was marred by multiple significant crashes. Italian rider Laura Tomasi of Uno-X had to abandon the race early. Marlen Reusser, a contender for the general classification, also fell but managed to remount her bike.

Despite the disruptions, the peloton kept pace with the breakaway riders, who at one point held a six-minute lead. Veteran rider Amanda Spratt joined the breakaway but was eventually caught by the fast-moving peloton with less than six kilometers remaining.

The course featured a steep climb in the final kilometers, which thinned the field. However, no climber could distance Wiebes, who secured a clear victory in the sprint. The sole Danish participant, Amalie Dideriksen, did not play a visible role in the finale but may have better prospects on the flatter stage to come. The Tour de France Femmes continues for nine stages, concluding on August 9 in Nice.
