Wife of alleged 'huachicol' leader reports being followed in Mexico, seeks protection

Mónica Gámez, wife of Fernando Farías Laguna, who is accused by Mexico's Attorney General's Office of leading a fiscal 'huachicol' (fuel theft) network, has publicly stated she was followed by a suspicious vehicle in Hermosillo.

Gámez shared her experience on social media, detailing how a white van followed her from her home to the international highway. She directly appealed to Governor Alfonso Durazo for security measures, expressing significant fear.

The Sonora Attorney General's Office (FGJE) has reported that Gámez has not yet filed a formal complaint. The FGJE is actively trying to locate her to obtain her statement and understand the circumstances. Once her testimony is received and a complaint is filed, the office will conduct a risk assessment to determine if protective measures can be granted.

The incident occurs while Farías Laguna, who was captured in Argentina on April 23 and transferred to Mexico's Altiplano prison on August 20, faces legal proceedings related to the alleged fuel theft network.
