Wigwe University Denies Mass Staff Sack Reports

Reports of mass staff terminations at Wigwe University have been dismissed as false and misleading by the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi. In a telephone interview, Al-Akaidi clarified that no widespread dismissals have occurred. He explained that only two or three staff members departed last year following due process, and no employees have been terminated this year. Al-Akaidi attributed these separations to performance considerations, emphasizing that they were conducted in line with established disciplinary procedures. "Our pace is fast and our standards are high. Naturally, some individuals may find it challenging to keep up," he stated, adding that such departures are handled with respect. The Vice-Chancellor also refuted allegations that staff retention decisions were solely his responsibility, highlighting the university's transparent and collective decision-making governance structure. He affirmed that all staff-related matters, including welfare, discipline, and separation, follow clearly defined institutional procedures ensuring fairness and accountability. "We are building a culture of dedication, quality, and excellence," Al-Akaidi said. "Our goal is to encourage every member of our community to reach their full potential, and we hold ourselves to the highest standards to achieve that." Wigwe University, licensed in 2023, admitted its first students in October 2024 and currently has approximately 300 students enrolled across 21 degree programs in four colleges: Engineering; Science and Computing; Management and Social Sciences; and Arts. The university remains committed to its founder, the late Herbert Wigwe's, vision of creating a leading African university.
