Wild boars destroy Belgian corn maze

A planned corn maze in Beringen, Belgium, will not go ahead this year after wild boars ravaged the field. The maze was a test project by the social enterprise De Posthoorn, intended to draw visitors to its new bistro.

"This is really very sour," said Pieter Descelle, director of De Posthoorn. He explained that a local farmer planted the corn, but wild boars consumed a large portion of it. The damage is extensive, leaving the field looking "sad."

Descelle mentioned that the boars likely visited the field during the night. Despite taking precautions, such as fencing the maze entrance, the animals managed to get through. The farmer will harvest the remaining corn immediately, fearing the boars might return.

De Posthoorn has no immediate alternative plans but hopes visitors will still come to their site and bistro. "We are already looking forward to next summer. We would like to try organizing a corn maze again. That gives us courage," Descelle added.
