Wildfire Burns 13,000 Hectares 100km North of Madrid, Forcing Evacuations

A wildfire raging about 100 kilometers north of Madrid has consumed more than 13,000 hectares and prompted the evacuation of several hundred residents, local authorities reported Sunday. The blaze, identified as the "forest fire of La Mierla in the province of Guadalajara," is devastating a significant portion of the Sierra Norte natural park.

Despite the deployment of approximately 350 firefighters and members of the Military Unit of Emergencies (UME), supported by 25 aircraft, controlling the flames remains a difficult challenge. The fire originated in a wooded and mountainous area that is home to endangered species, including eagles, wolves, and butterflies.

This incident is compounded by another major fire that began Wednesday near Zaragoza, scorching nearly 15,000 hectares. While authorities in Aragon reported a "clearly favorable evolution" for that fire, the situation in Guadalajara remains critical. The combined impact of these fires is particularly concerning as Spain anticipates its third heatwave starting Tuesday.

Spain has recently experienced devastating wildfires, including one in southern Andalusia on July 9 that resulted in 13 deaths and destroyed 7,000 hectares. The country is on the front lines of global warming, facing increasingly prolonged and frequent heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 40°C, creating conditions ripe for destructive fires. In 2025, the country recorded its worst year for wildfires in recent history, with over 393,000 hectares consumed.
