Wildfire Burns 13,000 Hectares North of Madrid, Forces Evacuations

A devastating wildfire north of Madrid has scorched more than 13,000 hectares of land, prompting the evacuation of several hundred residents. The blaze, which ignited Thursday in the province of Guadalajara, continues to spread through the Sierra Norte natural park, a region known for its rich biodiversity.

Local authorities described the fire as "difficult" to control. Approximately 350 firefighters and members of the Military Unit of Emergencies (UME) are deployed, utilizing 25 aircraft to combat the flames. The fire originated in a wooded, mountainous area that is home to vulnerable species, including eagles, wolves, and butterflies. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far.

This incident occurs as Spain prepares for its third heatwave of the summer, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C. The wildfire follows another major blaze that erupted Wednesday near Zaragoza, burning nearly 15,000 hectares. Regional authorities in Aragón reported that this fire is showing a "clearly favorable evolution."

Spain has recently experienced some of the deadliest wildfires in its recent history, including one in Andalusia on July 9 that claimed 13 lives and destroyed 7,000 hectares. The country is on the front lines of climate change, facing increasingly prolonged and frequent heatwaves that create tinderbox conditions, contributing to devastating fires. In 2022, over 393,000 hectares were consumed by flames, marking the worst year on record for wildfires in Spain.
