Wildfire destroys parts of U.S. city Spokane

Wildfires have ravaged the U.S. state of Washington, with a significant blaze destroying hundreds of buildings and forcing thousands to evacuate the city of Spokane. The "Old Trails" fire spread with alarming speed through the northwestern city of 230,000 residents, consuming homes and leaving behind scenes of devastation. Reports and images depicted neighborhoods reduced to rubble, with only chimneys remaining of some houses. At least 600 buildings were reportedly destroyed or damaged, and an estimated 2,180 hectares burned.

Evacuation orders were issued for several northern neighborhoods, with authorities urging immediate departure. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, calling it one of the most severe wildfire events on record for the region. Approximately 60,000 residents were left without power. The fire, which spread from the Spokane River's banks into the urban area, prompted the mobilization of National Guard forces to assist with relief efforts.

Washington is currently enduring its fourth consecutive year of drought, creating dangerous conditions statewide. Governor Ferguson highlighted that record-breaking dry spells combined with strong winds are fueling the fires. Restrictions on open fires and agricultural burning are in place until the end of September. The National Weather Service had previously issued a warning for eastern Washington, citing an "exceptionally dangerous situation" due to extreme fire risk. Officials noted that the current year is already shaping up to be one of the busiest wildfire seasons on record, with August just beginning.
