Wildfire in Southern France Burns 180 Hectares, Forces 120 Evacuations

A wildfire erupted Sunday in the Var department of southeastern France, scorching 180 hectares and prompting the evacuation of at least 120 residents. Firefighters battled the blaze, which was fanned by wind and dry vegetation, causing it to spread with extreme speed.

The fire began around 3:30 p.m. local time in the village of Taradeau. It initially consumed 60 hectares to the east of the town before jumping to the neighboring municipality of Les Arcs-sur-Argens, where it burned an additional 120 hectares. The Prefect of the Var reported the fire's rapid advance.

In Les Arcs-sur-Argens, the neighborhoods of Château Saint-Pierre, Font du Loup, and Plateau des Aires were evacuated with the assistance of the gendarmerie. A community center in the town provided shelter for the 120 evacuees. In Taradeau, about ten homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure, and a reception center was established at the village's community center.

The wildfire disrupted transportation, cutting off rail traffic between Toulon and Les Arcs in both directions. Four regional roads were also closed due to the fire. France is currently under a national wildfire alert after experiencing three heatwaves this summer, including an unprecedentedly intense one in late June. Earlier this month, the country saw severe fires in Perpignan and the departments of Drome and Indre. In mid-July, 10% of the historic Fontainebleau forest, a renowned natural site southeast of Paris, was consumed by flames. President Emmanuel Macron recently described the situation as "unprecedented," noting the high frequency and widespread nature of fires across the country.
