Wildfire Nears Reno, Nevada; Tens of Thousands Evacuated

Authorities in Nevada have issued evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people as a wildfire rapidly advances toward the city of Reno.

Approximately 42,000 residents are either evacuated or in areas where evacuations are underway. An additional 45,000 people have been advised to prepare for potential departure. Local television footage shows flames nearing roadways, and eyewitness videos depict smoke spreading over nearby residential areas.

The fire has already scorched over 5,200 hectares. Officials have confirmed the blaze is human-caused and are investigating its origin. The fire has destroyed several homes in the rugged terrain near Reno.

Three civilians and three emergency responders have been injured, according to Shane Akerson, who is leading the firefighting and rescue operations. Around 5,000 residents are experiencing power outages.

Firefighters battled the blaze under extreme conditions on Saturday, including high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County, which encompasses Reno and parts of Lake Tahoe. He urged vigilance and adherence to local authorities' instructions due to the rapidly evolving situation. The National Guard is assisting with two helicopters and 60 personnel.
