Wildfire Spreading from Muğla to Antalya Uncontrolled, Governor Says

A significant wildfire, initially sparked in Muğla's Seydikemer district, has spread rapidly into the forested areas of Antalya's Kaş district. Fueled by strong winds, the blaze has necessitated a large-scale response involving both aerial and ground firefighting teams.

Despite the deployment of four planes, 16 helicopters, 153 fire engines, and 6 heavy machinery units, along with a total of 853 personnel, the fire remains out of control. Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin characterized the situation as dire, stating, "The fire is far from being extinguished." He noted that the wind, described as a northerly gale reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, significantly complicated efforts.

The fire's spread to residential areas within Kaş district, where homes are interspersed with forests, has created additional challenges. Governor Şahin reported that greenhouses caught fire, releasing toxic gases that affected personnel, and residents attempted to save their homes and property, complicating evacuation efforts. "We have largely ensured the safety of our citizens and protected most of the houses, despite some losses," he said.

Governor Şahin emphasized the critical conditions, noting temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and humidity below 30 percent, combined with high winds, create an alarm situation. He urged the public to exercise extreme caution, refraining from activities like picnics, agricultural work, or construction that could spark further fires. "Even a single spark, with the effect of the bellows, can lead us down a path from which there is no return," he warned.

The affected area spans approximately 10 square kilometers. Firefighting efforts continue, with a slight advantage gained as the wind has shifted to a southerly direction. The primary focus remains on securing the perimeters of residential areas. Officials are in constant communication with relevant ministers regarding the ongoing response.
