Wildfires advance toward Bordeaux, devastate Spain, forcing 300,000 to flee

Wildfires are raging across France and Spain, pushing toward the outskirts of Bordeaux and devastating central Spain. In France, the blazes have forced the evacuation of around 220,000 people, with flames approaching the city's main entry points. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave acknowledged the proximity of the threat, though immediate city evacuation was not planned. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the situation as "unprecedented" and the fire as "not under control."

French authorities released footage of door-to-door evacuations in municipalities near Bordeaux, urging families to flee in the dark. The fires have spread through popular tourist destinations like Cap Ferret peninsula and surrounding countryside. Meanwhile, Spain is battling major blazes in Avila, Madrid, and Toledo provinces. The flames have destroyed over 50,000 hectares in Avila, making it the largest wildfire in Spain's recent history. Another fire in eastern Spain's Castellon province has burned over 4,300 hectares and threatens pine and cork oak forests.

We have a fire that is not under control and which is moving in the direction of the city area. The overall situation is very unfavourable, we are in a situation that is unprecedented.

"The fire is out of control, it's very difficult to extinguish from a technical standpoint, especially because of the adverse weather conditions that will continue throughout the day," said Valencian regional leader Juanfran Perez. International aid is mobilizing through the European Union's civil protection mechanism, with Greece and Italy sending firefighting aircraft to Spain, and Portugal deploying military personnel and equipment.
