Wildfires break out across Finland due to exceptionally dry spring

Finland is grappling with an unusually high risk of wildfires across the country, a situation exacerbated by an exceptionally dry and warm early spring. The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a nationwide wildfire warning, a measure typically seen later in the season, underscoring the severity of the current conditions. This early warning prohibits open fires and controlled burns, crucial measures to prevent the ignition and spread of blazes.

The current dry spell is a direct consequence of a combination of factors. Winter saw significantly low snowfall across most of Finland, with only Lapland experiencing normal or even heavy snow cover. This lack of snow, coupled with an unprecedentedly warm March and minimal rainfall in many regions, has left the landscape tinder-dry. Meteorologists note that in some areas of southern and eastern Finland, rainfall totals for March and April have been as low as 20 millimeters, roughly half the average.

The wildfire warning was issued as early as the end of March, which is an unusually early time.

These dry conditions create a highly flammable environment, particularly as the landscape is covered in dead vegetation from the previous year, awaiting new green growth. Wildfires in spring typically start from grass fires, often ignited by the burning of debris in yards or controlled burns in fields, which can easily spread out of control. The rapid melting of the limited snow cover, accelerated by the warm spring sunshine, has further dried out the ground.

While climate change is a contributing factor to warmer trends, meteorologists also point to natural variations in winter weather. However, the combination of low snow, early warmth, and scant rainfall has created a rare and dangerous situation. The forecast for Wednesday suggests a cooling trend and the arrival of rain, which may alleviate the immediate wildfire risk, but the underlying dryness remains a concern for the coming weeks.
