Wildfires Near Madrid: Priority is 'Saving Lives,' Says Prime Minister Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared that the primary objective in combating the raging wildfires west of Madrid is "saving lives." He warned that the situation remains "complex" due to anticipated strong and erratic winds, despite a recent drop in temperatures.

The devastating fires have scorched the dry countryside, forcing an estimated 35,000 people to flee their homes. Authorities have described the situation as the worst wildfire event ever recorded in the region. Thick gray smoke has blanketed the sky west of the capital, and the smell of burning has reached central Madrid, causing respiratory irritation and prompting residents to keep their windows shut.

"Our priority, our thinking, our objective is your lives, saving your lives and protecting inhabited areas," Sanchez told reporters in the village of Cenicientos, located within the affected fire zone. He acknowledged that the cooler night temperatures offered a "window of opportunity" over the weekend for firefighters to tackle the "very serious" blaze.

We are going to experience complicated hours, because even if the temperatures have dropped, we do not know exactly how the wind will evolve, nor what its strength will be.

However, concerns remain high. The delegate of the central government in Madrid, Francisco Martin, had previously cautioned about unpredictable wind gusts. Two separate forest fires in the Madrid region merged on Friday, creating a massive blaze that threatened to connect with a third fire near Avila.
