Wildfires Ravage Croatia: People Forced to Flee Tourist Town

Wildfires are raging across Croatia, forcing hundreds of residents and tourists to evacuate a small town on the Adriatic coast as flames consumed homes and vehicles.

In Lokva Rogoznica, over 150 firefighters are battling rapidly spreading blazes that have engulfed surrounding pine forests and encroached upon residential areas. The fires have destroyed houses and vehicles, prompting a large-scale evacuation. Local media reported that the coastal road passing through the town has been closed due to the flames affecting sections of it.

This latest outbreak is part of a severe heatwave gripping Croatia, with record-breaking temperatures recorded in several coastal towns and cities in recent days. Authorities have relocated at least 1,000 displaced individuals to a local sports hall in Omiš, located south of Split.

Slavko Tucaković, chief of the Croatian Firefighting Association, described the situation as "extremely worrying" and anticipated a difficult night ahead for the firefighters. He has requested additional teams from other parts of the country to bolster the efforts already underway. Four Canadair firefighting aircraft are on standby to assist once daylight permits, as they were unable to operate during the night.

Officials noted that strong winds are fanning the flames, exacerbating the spread. The governor of the Split region confirmed that some individuals sustained burns. Earlier on Thursday, firefighters, with the help of Canadair aircraft, had managed to contain another significant forest fire on Brač island, near the coast of Split. These incidents occur amidst a summer of extreme heat across parts of Europe, increasing the risk of wildfires.
