Wildfires spread across Indonesia's Bromo National Park

Wildfires are raging through Indonesia's Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park on Java, consuming at least 743 hectares of land and forcing the indefinite closure of the popular tourist destination. The flames have reached the Penanjakan viewpoint, offering spectacular vistas of the 2,329-meter-high Mount Bromo.

Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers, police, park rangers, and volunteers are battling the blaze. Three helicopters are assisting in efforts over difficult-to-access areas. The fires are occurring during a period of unusually severe dry weather across Indonesia, which has seen numerous wildfires reported.

In Jambi province on Sumatra island, over 50 hectares of peatland have burned. The deep peat soil, limited water, challenging terrain, and strong winds are hindering firefighting operations. Smoke from these fires has enveloped surrounding areas in a choking haze, raising concerns about air quality among residents.

Similar fires are common in Sumatra and Borneo during dry seasons, often ignited illegally by plantation owners or farmers to clear land for cultivation. These fires frequently blanket parts of Southeast Asia in dangerous smoke. Indonesia's meteorological agency predicts August and September will be the most critical months due to dry vegetation and strong winds that promote rapid fire spread.
