Wimbledon finalist Muchova knocked out as ninth seed Svitolina also falls in New York

Karolina Muchova's strong record in New York ended in the third round when American Emma Navarro defeated the seventh seed 6-3, 7-5. The Czech finalist at the recent Wimbledon had reached at least the quarterfinals in her previous three U.S. Open appearances, including semifinal runs in 2023 and 2024.

Navarro, the tournament's 27th seed, will face Russia's Anna Kalinskaya in the round of 16. Kalinskaya produced another surprise by beating ninth seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued to grow in confidence after beating China's Wu Yibing without dropping a set. Alcaraz, who had not played on the ATP Tour since mid-April because of a wrist injury, said he was pleased with his performance in the most difficult moments. He also said his body had handled the early demands of his return better than expected. His next opponent is American Tommy Paul.

Ninth seed Ben Shelton also advanced after beating Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in a match that stretched deep into the night. Shelton returned to the U.S. Open's last 16 for the first time since 2023 and will meet Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is gradually returning to competitive form.
