Wine bottle trick keeps plants watered for weeks

For those struggling to keep plants hydrated, especially during vacations or busy periods, a simple yet effective solution lies in repurposing an empty wine bottle.

This gardening hack transforms a used wine bottle into a self-watering system. The process involves filling a clean 750-milliliter bottle with fresh water, or a diluted compost solution for struggling plants. The bottle is then inverted and inserted into the soil near the plant's roots.

A small vacuum forms in the bottle's neck, controlling the water release. As the soil begins to dry, it creates a slight suction, drawing out just enough water from the bottle to meet the plant's needs. This slow, consistent release mimics a drip irrigation system, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist without the risk of over or under-watering.

Plant grower Rachel Kemery, from Rising Iris Farm, notes that this technique is inspired by ancient irrigation methods using clay pots called 'ollas.' She has successfully used the wine bottle method for potted plants for years. To ensure stability in loose soil, placing a smooth pebble around the bottle's neck can help. After about an hour, observing one or two small air bubbles in the bottle's neck indicates the system is working correctly, with water slowly seeping into the earth.
