Wisconsin Kitten Sets World Record with 29 Toes

A kitten from Wisconsin has captured the world's attention by breaking the Guinness World Record for the most toes on a cat. Erebus Anomaly, a Maine Coon, was born with an astonishing 29 toes, surpassing the previous record holder.

Erebus's journey began with significant health challenges. He battled a severe case of pneumonia and experienced a nearly fatal aspiration event shortly after his birth. Despite these early struggles, he has now gained international recognition for his unique physical trait.

The kitten's extraordinary number of toes is due to a genetic condition known as polydactyly, which causes more than the usual number of digits to develop. This trait is relatively common within the Maine Coon breed, according to veterinary studies. Cats typically have 18 toes, but Erebus's condition resulted in eight toes on one paw and seven on the others.

The most toes on a cat is 29 and was achieved by Erebus (USA) in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, USA, as measured on 13 May 2026.

His father also exhibited polydactyly, born with six toes on each paw for a total of 24. Erebus, born in March, not only outdid his father but also beat the previous world record by one toe. The record was previously held by a Canadian cat named Jake since 2002, and later tied by Toby Henderson from Michigan.

Erebus was formally recognized by Guinness World Records on May 29, 2026. He resides in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, with breeders Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett at Blue Northern Maine Coones, where he was raised before being put up for adoption. The breeders noticed his exceptional toe count and worked to confirm his world record status.
