Ottawa firefighters free bird caught in tree, tangled in fishing line

Ottawa firefighters successfully rescued a belted kingfisher that had become entangled in fishing line while trapped in a tree. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the 900 block of Vances Side Road in Dunrobin.

A concerned citizen discovered the bird struggling in the fishing line, which was draped over a tree branch extending over the water. The citizen promptly contacted the police, who then alerted Ottawa Fire Services. Responders arrived at the scene and identified the distressed bird as a belted kingfisher.

Crews deployed a water rescue craft to access the tree safely. Using a pole saw, they carefully lowered parts of the tree before cutting the fishing line. This allowed them to free the bird from its predicament.

Ottawa Fire Services reported that their Water Rescue Technicians wrapped the bird in a blanket and placed it in a box. The citizen who initially reported the situation then took the bird to a wildlife care center for a thorough assessment.
