Wisconsin tornado causes extensive damage and cuts power to thousands of homes

A powerful tornado tore through Wisconsin on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction that splintered homes, felled trees, and cut power to more than 30,000 residents. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado's presence in Winnebago County, with significant damage reported in Appleton and Menasha.

The word we all were using was 'ominous.' It's like, 'Whoa, look at that.' ... You looked outside and you thought it was three in the morning, it was that dark.

Eyewitnesses described an ominous scene as the sky darkened dramatically. Greg Van Driest, working in downtown Appleton, likened the darkness to three in the morning. Video footage circulating online showed debris, including twisted metal and wood, scattered across highways as vehicles navigated the wreckage. A warehouse appeared to sustain heavy damage.

Obviously, the footage looks devastating. Clearly some significant damage done with power lines down and things like that.

Gordon Hintz, the top elected official in Winnebago County, stated that while emergency officials were still conducting searches, there were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries. He acknowledged the devastating appearance of the damage, noting downed power lines and reports of completely destroyed buildings and overturned vehicles. All available storm warnings were activated to ensure public safety.

We have been receiving calls of damage with a lot of trees down, power lines down. We've been searching for some pictures of the structural damage.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service reported various types of damage in southern Outagamie County and eastern Winnebago County, including numerous downed trees and power lines. While searching for images of structural damage, they confirmed no injuries had been reported up to that point. The tornado was tracked moving over Lake Winnebago and heading south toward Fond du Lac County.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.
