Witkoff says Moscow and Kyiv talks made ‘substantive progress’ toward trilateral negotiations

US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff says his visits to Moscow and Kyiv, alongside Jared Kushner, produced “substantive progress” toward further trilateral talks aimed at ending the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Witkoff said the meetings with Russian and Ukrainian representatives focused on facilitating more dialogue. He wrote that progress included work on scheduling trilateral negotiations, while President Donald Trump was working to stop the killing and pursue a lasting peace.

The US envoys arrived in Kyiv by train on September 6 and met Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Sofiiska Square. National security advisers to the leaders of France, the United Kingdom and Germany arrived in Kyiv at the same time. Before that visit, Witkoff and Kushner had travelled to Moscow for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Witkoff said the delegation’s task was to “bring the sides closer together.” Zelenskyy said the Kyiv discussions produced several new ideas for the next stage of negotiations. He also said the sides had agreed to hold another meeting involving Ukraine, the United States and Europe in the near future.
