Wolfsburg throw away 3-0 lead in eight-goal draw with Energie Cottbus

Energie Cottbus turned an apparent rout into an eight-goal spectacle, battling back from 3-0 down to draw 4-4 at Wolfsburg. The result extended Wolfsburg’s wait for a first home win since January 14, when it beat eventual fellow relegated side St. Pauli 2-1.

Robert Glatzel put Wolfsburg ahead from the penalty spot in the fourth minute after goalkeeper Marcel Lotka brought him down during a clearance attempt. Vinicius Souza added another in the 25th minute, and Glatzel struck again from close range after a Cottbus mistake in buildup play.

Cottbus responded through Luca Erlein in first-half stoppage time and King Manu four minutes after the break. Tolcay Ciğerci equalized from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, and Mattias Svanberg restored Wolfsburg’s lead in the 79th. Dmytro Bogdanov completed the comeback in the 91st minute, shortly after Wolfsburg defender Mathys Angely received a second yellow card for a serious foul.

Wolfsburg remained near the top with eight points, while Cottbus moved to four points after two consecutive defeats. Nürnberg also dropped points for the first time, drawing 2-2 at Holstein Kiel after three wins. The result still gave Miroslav Klose’s team 10 points from four matches, its best start in 26 years.

Kaiserslautern strengthened its early position near the top by beating Darmstadt 3-0. Kaiserslautern remained unbeaten on eight points, while Darmstadt stayed bottom after a major squad overhaul.
