Woman Accused of Murdering Husband by Setting Apartment Fire in Vâlcea

A horrific incident unfolded in Alunu commune, Vâlcea County, Romania, where a man died after being thrown from the third floor of his apartment building following an explosion. Prosecutors allege that the fire was intentionally set by the victim's 51-year-old wife, who is accused of locking her husband in their bedroom before igniting the residence.

The alleged crime occurred on August 8, 2026. Investigators claim the woman deliberately started fires in both the bedroom where her husband was sleeping and another room within the apartment. After setting the fires, she reportedly locked the bedroom door from the outside, taking the key with her, and retreated to an adjacent room.

According to investigators, the victim attempted to escape by opening the bedroom window. At that moment, accumulated gases within the apartment ignited, causing a powerful explosion. The force of the blast propelled the man through the window, and he fell to the street below, succumbing to his injuries from the impact.

The woman has been detained for 24 hours and subsequently remanded into pre-trial detention for 30 days by a judge. The fire, which broke out on Saturday, required the intervention of firefighters. A woman trapped inside the apartment was rescued and transported to the hospital. Firefighters also removed four gas cylinders from the residence during their operation.
