Woman Arrested for Hiding Husband Alive in Home Duct After Alleged Attack

A 38-year-old woman, Sharmila Pravin Jagtap, has been arrested in Baramati, Maharashtra, for allegedly attempting to kill her husband and concealing him inside a makeshift duct at their home. The arrest followed a complaint filed by her 71-year-old father-in-law, Prakash Jagtap.

According to Assistant Police Inspector Shashikant Ingawale, the alleged attack on Sharmila's husband, Pravin, occurred between July 30 and August 1. Police stated that Sharmila allegedly poisoned Pravin before assaulting him with a bat, rendering him unconscious. She then reportedly placed him inside a rectangular duct constructed within the residence and covered him with a cloth.

Investigators believe Sharmila intended to further conceal her husband by covering the duct with a stone slab. However, she allegedly enlisted workers to help with the task. On August 1, while placing the stone slab over the duct, the workers noticed movement from inside, prompting suspicion.

The workers looked into the duct and were shocked to find Pravin alive. They immediately alerted the police via the emergency Dial 112 service. A police team responded promptly, rescuing Pravin and transporting him to the hospital, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities suggest the alleged attack stemmed from a domestic dispute. The couple has two children, who were not present during the incident. While the family was initially hesitant to report the matter, they eventually approached the police, leading to a case being registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempt to murder. Sharmila is expected to appear in court, where police will seek her custody for further investigation.
