Woman cleared of owning XL bully that fatally bit partner's father

Chanel Fong, 33, has been found not guilty of owning an XL bully dog that caused the death of her partner's father. The jury at Caernarfon Crown Court cleared Fong of charges related to owning the dangerously out-of-control dog, named Cookie, and of being in charge of the animal at the time of the fatal attack. The victim, Keven Jones, 62, from Chester, died from severe blood loss after being bitten on the leg. The incident took place in May 2022, prior to XL Bullies being officially added to the list of banned dog breeds in the UK. Jones had been staying at Fong's home in Wrexham and was reportedly in poor health, taking methadone and blood-thinning medication. During the trial, the prosecution alleged that Fong was a joint owner of Cookie. However, Fong maintained that the dog belonged to her partner, Joshua Jones, who was not present during the attack. The court heard that multiple dogs, including two XL Bullies named Fire and Rogue, were at the property. Rogue, Cookie's mother, had to be kept separate due to being in season. Witnesses recounted that on May 23, 2022, Jones told Fong he would bring Cookie and another dog in from the garden. He was subsequently heard shouting at Cookie to "get off" him. Fong also called for Cookie to come down from the garden. Jones then approached Fong, pointing to his bleeding leg and stating, "he's got me there." Fong immediately called emergency services and attempted first aid, but Jones could not be saved. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Keven Jones died from extreme blood loss caused by dog bites. Cookie was later humanely euthanized.
