Woman Gives Birth in Jashore Jail Ambulance

A 19-year-old woman arrested on a murder charge gave birth to a baby boy inside an ambulance from Jashore Central Jail on Friday.

Bristy Khatun was being taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital after going into labour when she delivered the baby around 8:40 p.m. in the Churamonkathi area of Jashore Sadar, jail officials said.

Bristy was arrested on February 6 in connection with the killing of van driver Jasim Uddin in Daulatpur village in Jhenaidah’s Harinakundu upazila. The victim’s father, Moktar Hossain, filed the case with Harinakundu Police Station.

The jail provided the baby with clothes, a mosquito net, bedding, a towel, napkins, diapers and olive oil, among other essentials. The mother and baby were also given flowers, and sweets were distributed among those present.

Jailer Abid Ahmed said authorities immediately arranged medical care for the mother and newborn. Both were in good health, officials said. “We have ensured all necessary support for the mother and her newborn on humanitarian grounds,” Abid said. He added that the arrangements followed instructions from the inspector general of prisons.
