Woman Gives Birth on Flight From Copenhagen to Ho Chi Minh City, Plane Diverts to Myanmar

A passenger gave birth aboard a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 while flying from Copenhagen to Ho Chi Minh City, forcing the aircraft to divert to Yangon for medical care.

Vietnam Airlines said passenger N.L.D.L., a Vietnamese national, went into labor about 10 hours after flight VN38 departed Denmark on Sept. 5. The cabin crew began providing first aid and made an announcement seeking passengers with medical expertise. Five passengers volunteered to help, and the baby was delivered during the flight.

After the birth, the mother’s condition appeared to require further medical examination. The crew therefore changed course and landed in Yangon instead of continuing directly to Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam Airlines coordinated with ground services in Myanmar and airport authorities to prepare medical assistance.

After the aircraft landed, the mother and baby were taken to hospital for monitoring and treatment. The diversion interrupted the flight, but VN38 departed Yangon at 3:30 a.m. local time on Sept. 6 and reached Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 6:05 a.m.

The airline said it diverted the flight to ensure the mother and baby could reach medical care as quickly as possible, despite the additional costs and disruption to operations. Vietnam Airlines said other flights have also diverted for urgent medical situations, including flights to Hong Kong, Kolkata and Istanbul.
