Woman isolated in Spanish hospital tests negative for hantavirus for third time

Health authorities in Alicante, Spain, have reported a significant development in the case of a woman suspected of having hantavirus. After being isolated since Friday, the 32-year-old patient has now returned negative results on her third PCR diagnostic test. This news brings relief, as she had initially presented with mild symptoms, raising concerns due to her proximity to a confirmed case on an international flight.

The woman had been on the same aircraft as a Dutch passenger who was part of an outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. This passenger later died in South Africa, prompting immediate health protocols in Spain. The woman, who remains asymptomatic, will continue to be monitored at the hospital, with further testing scheduled to ensure her complete recovery and rule out any lingering risk.

In parallel, Spain has initiated a quarantine period for fourteen passengers from the same cruise ship who are currently isolated at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid. Following World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, their quarantine began on May 10th and will be re-evaluated after 28 days.
