Woman says she saw through alleged 49ers fraudster’s claims: “Too good to be true”

Ayana Velasquez knew something was wrong when videos supposedly showing Daejon Love as a San Francisco 49ers player appeared in her phone as screen recordings.

Velasquez told CBS News that she met Love through a dating app nearly five years ago. He used the name “Jonathan” and portrayed himself as a man who wanted marriage, children and a house. They went on one date.

When I met him in 2021, he portrayed that he wanted to be with me, wanted to give me kids, wanted to give me a house.

Love also claimed that his family ranked among “one of the richest families in Switzerland” and owned property in the United States. Velasquez said she grew skeptical when he mentioned having a private chef. She eventually stopped responding to him.

In 2024, Love contacted her again and said he was “in the NFL now.” He sent more than a dozen photos and videos that appeared to show him at Levi’s Stadium and interacting with fans from a team bus. Velasquez checked the footage’s metadata after saving it and found that it had been screen recorded. “It just seemed too good to be true,” she said, and then blocked him.

The FBI arrested Love, 35, and 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan on Aug. 24. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon charged both with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Prosecutors allege that Love posed as a wealthy NFL player and investor, persuaded women that they were in genuine romantic relationships with him and encouraged them to lend him large sums of money. They allege Chan acted as Love’s investment adviser.

CBS News said it contacted Love for comment, but it was not immediately clear whether either defendant had a lawyer.
