Woman Who Stalked Actor Hwang Jung-min Sentenced to 6 Million Won Fine

A woman in her 40s who was prosecuted for stalking actor Hwang Jung-min received a 6 million won fine in a first-instance ruling and was ordered to complete 40 hours of stalking treatment.

Judge Kim Young-ah of the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Court issued the ruling on the charge of violating the stalking punishment law and other offenses. Prosecutors had requested a 10 million won fine.

The woman, identified only as A, faced trial over allegations that she sent hundreds of KakaoTalk messages and text messages to Hwang and his family. The court said the content, number and frequency of the messages were sufficient to cause Hwang anxiety or fear. It also found that A knew Hwang did not want to be contacted.

The court said, “Even if there had been a legitimate reason for contacting him, the content and frequency of the messages went beyond the level that could justify the defendant’s conduct.” It treated her lack of remorse and tendency to blame the victim as unfavorable factors, while considering her lack of prior criminal convictions in her favor.

Hwang’s side filed a complaint against A in August last year. A summary order imposing a 3 million won fine was issued in February, but she rejected it and requested a formal trial. Prosecutors cited long-term repeated contact, threatening social media posts and Hwang’s request for severe punishment when seeking the fine. A argued that the two had exchanged messages and claimed innocence. She has also filed a separate damages lawsuit worth more than 200 million won against Hwang. She did not attend the sentencing, and her lawyer said she would appeal.
