Worker Dies in Construction Accident at Taiwan School; Investigation Underway

A fatal construction accident at Lantan Junior High School in Chiayi City has prompted an investigation into workplace safety. The incident occurred on May 29, 2026, when a 35-year-old worker, identified by the surname Jiang, was killed while directing the installation of roofing panels for a new covered sports court.

City officials announced they would collaborate with the Southern Taiwan Occupational Safety and Health Center on May 30 to conduct a labor inspection. Lin Jia-wei, director of the Chiayi City Department of Labor and Youth Development, stated that the department was immediately notified of the accident and will work with the inspection center to clarify responsibilities.

The victim sustained severe blunt force trauma and multiple fractures after being struck by falling materials. A preliminary investigation by police and the coroner determined the death to be accidental. Victim support personnel have been assigned to assist the family with labor rights, insurance claims, and disaster relief consultations.
