World Athletics unveils lane draft, jump-offs for new Ultimate Championship

World Athletics is set to revolutionize its sport with a series of innovations for the inaugural Ultimate Championship event, scheduled to take place in Budapest from September 11 to 13. These changes, spearheaded by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, are designed to boost the sport's appeal to younger demographics and enhance its entertainment value.

A standout feature is the "lane draft" for the 200-meter races, where athletes will select their preferred semi-final heat and lane live, the day before competition, based on their world ranking. This introduces a new element of strategy and athlete agency into the event.

Furthermore, the championship will guarantee outright winners in the high jump and pole vault, eliminating the possibility of ties. Any deadlocks will be resolved through immediate jump-offs, ensuring a decisive outcome for these events. Field events will also be streamlined, with athletes receiving two attempts before the field is progressively reduced from eight to six, and finally to four competitors, keeping the focus on the leading contenders.

Broadcasting will be enhanced with augmented graphics, including projected finishing positions and win probabilities, offering viewers deeper insights. Athlete introductions and other presentation elements have been developed in collaboration with Olympic champion Noah Lyles. Pole vault world record-holder Mondo Duplantis has even created the event's official anthem. The competition itself will have a distinct visual identity, set against a black infield designed to highlight the action.
