World Cup 2026: 'Memo' Ochoa leads Mexico's list, seeking record sixth appearance

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is set to make history as he leads Mexico's squad for the 2026 North America World Cup. Coach Javier Aguirre confirmed Ochoa's inclusion in the final 26-player roster, marking his record-setting sixth World Cup appearance, a feat unprecedented for a goalkeeper.

"This night is special. We are 11 days away from starting the third World Cup in our country," Aguirre stated in a video released by the Mexican Football Federation. He expressed confidence in the team, adding, "We have assembled a great team that will represent its country with bravery, pride, and love for the jersey."

Ochoa, who debuted internationally in 2005, has played 153 matches for Mexico, with 11 World Cup appearances across four previous tournaments. While his selection has drawn some criticism from those advocating for younger goalkeepers, the squad also features 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora. Mora will become the youngest Mexican player ever to participate in a World Cup, set to be 17 years and 240 days old on the opening day.

The roster also includes two naturalized players: midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo, originally from Spain, and forward Julián Quiñones, who comes from Colombia. Fidalgo has a strong record in Mexican leagues, while Quiñones holds the record for most titles won by a foreign player in the Mexican league. The squad comprises 12 players with prior World Cup experience, alongside Ochoa.
