World Cup 2026 proceeds without hosts after Mexico, Canada, US eliminated before quarterfinals

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to continue without any of its host nations advancing to the quarterfinals, a historic first for the tournament. Canada, Mexico, and the United States all saw their World Cup dreams dashed in the Round of 16 within a span of three days.

Canada's journey ended first on July 4 in Houston, falling 3-0 to Morocco. The following day, Mexico was defeated 3-2 by England in a match that had raised hopes of breaking the team's historical "fifth game" barrier. The final blow came on July 6 when the United States lost 4-1 to Belgium in Seattle, marking the exit of the last Concacaf representative.

Mexico's elimination was particularly impactful. The team had advanced undefeated through the group stage without conceding a goal, fueling aspirations of surpassing their best-ever World Cup performance. However, England's offensive efficiency proved too much, consigning Mexico to another early exit.

Traditionally, hosting the World Cup has provided a competitive advantage, with most host nations progressing to at least the knockout stages. From Mexico in 1986 to Russia in 2018, hosts frequently reached decisive rounds. Notable exceptions include South Africa in 2010 and Qatar in 2022, both eliminated in the group stage. The 2026 edition, however, sets a new precedent by eliminating all three organizers before the quarterfinals.

With the United States' defeat, the Concacaf confederation is also out of the tournament. The 2026 World Cup will be remembered not only for being the first multinational hosting but also for the unprecedented early exit of all its host countries before the crucial quarterfinal stage.
