World Cup: Riyad Mahrez announces retirement after Algeria’s elimination

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has ended his international football career following his country's exit from the FIFA World Cup. The North Africans were eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 2-0 loss to Switzerland, marking the conclusion of Mahrez's tenure with the national team.

Speaking after the match, the 35-year-old reflected on his time representing Algeria. "Representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It’s been an immense honor and a great source of pride," Mahrez stated. He added, "It is the new generation’s turn to play."

Mahrez bid farewell to the Algerian supporters, acknowledging them with a thumbs-up and a wave as he left the pitch. Throughout his international career, the forward, who currently plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, amassed 119 appearances and scored 40 goals for Algeria, ranking second in both categories in the nation's history.
