Attending Austria's World Cup knockout match against Spain in Los Angeles presents a steep financial challenge for fans hoping to support their team, which is participating in the tournament for the first time in 28 years. The "Presse" newspaper has outlined the considerable expenses involved for spontaneous travelers.

While the cost of attending the World Cup was always anticipated, the journey to Los Angeles for the Round of 16 match is particularly demanding. Fans who supported the team in earlier group stage games, such as in Santa Clara, Dallas, and Kansas City, are now facing a significant hurdle. Bernhard Neuhold, managing director of ÖFB Wirtschaftsbetriebe GmbH, estimates that between 6,000 and 10,000 Austrian fans attended each group stage match.

Securing tickets for the match against Spain is proving difficult and expensive. While FIFA directs fans to its official resale platform, prices on secondary markets like StubHub, Tickongo, and Viagogo were listed between $985 and $5,538 on Monday evening. Many fans who attended the recent 3-3 draw against Algeria in Kansas City have already begun their journeys home, making the trip to Los Angeles a significant undertaking.

Beyond match tickets, the costs of flights and accommodation add to the financial burden. Spontaneously finding a hotel room or Airbnb in Los Angeles can cost around $200 per night. Flights from Vienna to California, departing on Tuesday or Wednesday for the Thursday match, were priced between 985 euros and over 1,500 euros on Monday evening. The newspaper notes that it is uncertain how many Austrian fans will make the trip to Spain, but it would not be surprising if the number is lower than in previous stages.
