World Igbo Congress Warns Politicians Against Threatening Igbos over Obi’s Presidential Ambition

The World Igbo Congress says it will no longer remain silent if political disputes put Igbo lives or property at risk as activity builds ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

Basil Onwukwe, the organisation’s vice-chairman, issued the warning in an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica. He said the WIC remained non-partisan, but neutrality did not mean indifference to threats against Igbo people involved in politics.

He said the organisation was monitoring political developments and would take appropriate steps whenever disagreements threatened the lives or property of Igbo people. “There should not be any threat to any Igbo person in Nigeria anymore. Onwukwe urged politicians and their supporters to conduct their campaigns without bitterness. “Everyone should engage in their politics without bitterness. Once the politics of anyone or a group becomes a threat to the life of any Igbo person, then they should be ready to contend with us,” he said.

Speaking ahead of the WIC convention in Austin, Texas, he said the organisation had created networks to support Igbo people living and doing business around the world. He also said it was working toward an Igbo Credit Union in the United States and pursuing plans for a Biafra Cenotaph and Monumental Park, proposed at last year’s convention in Worcester, Massachusetts.
