Yari’s Long Road to Campaign Command

Political appointments may arrive in a single sentence, but the experience behind them is rarely built overnight. That is the lens through which Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari’s new assignment deserves to be viewed.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally constituted the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council on Aug. 22, 2026, placing Yari at its head as director-general for the 2027 elections. The appointment elevated the former Zamfara governor to one of the most important operational positions in the governing party’s re-election machinery.

Yari’s political career spans more than two decades and has taken him through several layers of Nigeria’s political system. He served as secretary of the then All Nigeria People’s Party in Zamfara from 1999 to 2003, later became the party’s state chairman and national financial secretary, and won election to the House of Representatives in 2007. In 2011, he became governor of Zamfara and won re-election in 2015. That year, his fellow governors elected him chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. He now represents Zamfara West in the Senate.

Those positions represent different political tests. Party administration demands organization, legislative politics requires negotiation, and a governorship involves coordinating institutions, interests and competing constituencies. Leading the Governors’ Forum means managing peers with their own mandates, ambitions and convictions. The Senate adds another arena for building consensus.

A presidential campaign director-general must bring those demands together. The role extends beyond speeches and public appearances. It involves governors, legislators, party officials, support groups, regional interests, political financiers, communications teams, grassroots organizations and thousands of volunteers. Some interests will align, while others will collide. Yari’s record offers experience across those arenas, though the article cautions that experience alone does not guarantee success.
