World leaders gathered in New Jersey for the 2026 World Cup Final, with cameras capturing a seemingly cordial encounter between U.S. President Donald Trump and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The meeting occurred amidst a backdrop of recent diplomatic tensions between the two leaders.

Trump, who had previously described Spain as an "awful partner," appeared to greet Sánchez warmly. This interaction followed months of strained relations, notably Spain's refusal to allow the use of its military bases for U.S. aircraft involved in a conflict with Iran. Earlier, Sánchez had also faced disagreements with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney over economic policies.

Despite past friction, tensions between Trump and Sánchez seem to have subsided in recent weeks. This de-escalation follows Spain's pledge to increase defense spending and participate in a joint mission in Finland, according to El Pais. The two leaders had previously met at a NATO summit in Ankara earlier in the month.

Initially, it was uncertain if Prime Minister Sánchez would attend the final. However, he traveled to New York after receiving an invitation from FIFA. El Pais noted that eight Spanish ministers who had planned to attend as representatives had to cancel their plans once Sánchez's attendance was confirmed. Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were also present in the VIP box for the final.
