World Milk Day: An indispensable celebration

World Milk Day, observed globally on June 1, celebrates milk as a vital superfood, emphasizing its nutritional contributions to human development and the economic vitality of the dairy sector.

Officially established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the day focuses global attention on dairy. Its core purpose is to educate the public about milk's numerous biological benefits, reinforcing its indispensable role in food security worldwide.

Biologically and from a health perspective, milk is unparalleled in nutritional density. It provides high-value proteins, easily digestible carbohydrates in the form of lactose, essential fatty acids, and readily available calcium, phosphorus, and B vitamins. Consuming milk helps prevent chronic diseases, supports bone health, and optimizes cognitive development throughout life.

Globally, the demand for milk is immense, with humanity consuming approximately 1.5 billion liters daily. This makes dairy one of the most dynamic animal products, significantly influencing global nutritional stability. In Paraguay, the industrial dairy sector shows historic growth. According to the Paraguayan Chamber of Dairy Industries (CAPAINLAC), national milk production reached 890 million liters in 2024, a notable increase despite climatic challenges. This volume supports daily consumption of about 2.4 million liters in Paraguay, supplying urban centers, rural areas, and government feeding programs. The dairy sector generates multi-billion dollar economic activity annually in Paraguay.
