World Nomad Games on Issyk-Kul: Where to go and what to see

Kyrgyzstan is once again the stage for the World Nomad Games, an event promising a vibrant showcase of nomadic culture and traditions eight years after its last hosting. The program is extensive, offering spectators a rich tapestry of activities ranging from thrilling sports competitions to intellectual pursuits and hands-on workshops.

The games commence on August 31st in Bishkek with the opening ceremony at the "Bishkek Arena," Central Asia's largest stadium. This event will serve as the inaugural major function for the new venue, giving the public a preview before its official opening. Organizers are preparing a grand theatrical performance celebrating the history, philosophy, and spiritual heritage of nomadic civilizations, though the specifics remain under wraps.

Access to the stadium on opening day will be restricted for private vehicles; instead, free shuttle buses will transport attendees from various parts of Bishkek. Entry will require a QR ticket, and a Face ID recognition system will also be in place.

Following the Bishkek ceremony, the main events will transition to the picturesque Issyk-Kul region. Competitions, concerts, festivals, and exhibitions will unfold simultaneously across multiple venues in Cholpon-Ata and the Kyrchen jailoo (high-altitude pasture). Each location is designated a specific focus, from the Kok-Boru arena hosting equestrian matches to the hippodrome featuring races and concerts, and the "Gazprom" complex for wrestling tournaments.

Intellectually inclined visitors can head to the "Eurasia" hotel for tournaments in Toguz Korgool, Oware, and Mangala. The cultural segment is spread across the Kurmanjan Datka Center for Nomadic Civilization, "Rukh Ordo," and the "Dordoi-Nomad" complex. The "World of Nomads" ethno-village on the Kyrchen jailoo promises the most diverse program, including concerts, traditional games, craft fairs, and culinary contests.

Kok-Boru and Kok-Par are anticipated to be among the most spectacular and intense competitions. These matches, drawing fans from afar, will take place from September 2nd to 6th at the Kok-Boru arena. Kok-Par matches are scheduled for mornings (9:00-11:00), while Kok-Boru games will be in the afternoon (14:00-18:00). The finals on September 6th will determine the champions: Kok-Par at 11:00-13:00 and Kok-Boru at 14:00-16:00. While most matches are free to watch, a single ticket is required for the finals.
