World-Renowned Cello Ensemble 'Cello Octet Amsterdam' to Debut in Lithuania

For the first time in Lithuania, the acclaimed "Cello Octet Amsterdam" will present an exceptional concert, showcasing premieres for the country and the music of the legendary Japanese composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto. This ensemble of eight cellists has garnered international recognition for its groundbreaking programs and collaborations with leading contemporary composers.

Since its inception in 1989, "Cello Octet Amsterdam" has established itself as a significant force in contemporary music. The group has worked with iconic composers such as Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, David Lang, and Michael Gordon, among many others. Their performances have graced the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Amsterdam's "Concertgebouw" and "Muziekgebouw," London's "Wigmore Hall," and the "Royal Albert Hall" for the "BBC Proms." They have also toured extensively across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Esteemed cellist Yo-Yo Ma has lauded the ensemble, calling them a "true treasure" and a leading example for the global music community. "Wherever I perform – in Brazil, Japan, or the United States – I hear people talking about 'Cello Octet Amsterdam,'" Ma remarked, highlighting the ensemble's widespread influence and renown.

The octet consistently pushes the boundaries of traditional chamber music, demonstrating the cello's vast sonic potential. Their repertoire spans contemporary works, projects inspired by electronic music, theatrical elements, and interdisciplinary performances. They have notably recreated the entire sonic landscape of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Cello Band" and explored experimental electronic sounds in their "Cocon" project. The ensemble also engages younger audiences through family-oriented performances that incorporate theatrical elements.

"Cello Octet Amsterdam" actively addresses relevant societal themes such as consumerism, human trafficking, loneliness, and climate change through their collaborations with artists from various fields. Their upcoming concert in Vilnius will feature a special focus on the music of Ryuichi Sakamoto, described by "Nikkei Asia" as "the best-known and most successful Japanese musician in the world." Sakamoto's prolific career, which began with the synth-pop group "Yellow Magic Orchestra," expanded to encompass experimental electronics, classical music, visual arts, and sound installations, with his film scores achieving particular fame.
