World's youngest king dies at 34

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Toro and once the world's youngest king, has died at the age of 34. His passing was announced by the kingdom's prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, late on Thursday evening.

Nyimba ascended to the throne in 1995 at the tender age of three, following the death of his father. He ruled the Toro kingdom, located in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, for over three decades. The prime minister confirmed that the king, who was unmarried, has left behind an heir, ensuring the continuation of the monarchy.

Uganda is a republic, but it constitutionally recognizes several traditional monarchies, including Buganda, Bunyoro, Toro, and Busoga. These institutions, with roots predating colonialism, serve primarily cultural and ceremonial roles rather than political ones.

News of the king's death prompted expressions of sorrow from various figures, including opposition leader Bobi Wine, who wished the monarch eternal peace. Ugandan media widely reported the event, with many citizens sharing their grief on social media. The prime minister had previously described King Nyimba as being deeply connected to his subjects, stating that his youth was a source of energy and a fresh perspective for the kingdom.
