Wushu is Melaka's top hope for 20 gold medals at SUKMA Selangor

Wushu is once again expected to be the main source of gold medals for the Melaka contingent at the SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 games. This expectation is based on the wushu squad's strong performance at the previous SUKMA Sarawak 2024, where they were the largest contributors of gold medals for the state.

At SUKMA Sarawak 2024, Melaka secured a total of 18 gold medals, with wushu athletes bringing home seven of them. Pencak silat followed with three golds, and athletics with two. Other sports like fencing, squash, petanque, esports, badminton, and sepak takraw each contributed one gold medal.

Wushu will be one of our main hopes this time based on the performance shown before. Besides that, we also have hopes for pencak silat, squash, badminton and several other events that have great potential to contribute gold medals.

Melaka is targeting 20 gold medals for the upcoming games in Selangor. This goal is considered realistic by the contingent's Chef de Mission, Datuk VP Shanmugam, who also noted that other sports like pencak silat, squash, and badminton have strong potential to contribute. While some sports associations have projected over 30 golds, the official target remains at 20 to ensure achievability.

The Melaka contingent is currently about 90% prepared for the games. Out of over 700 registered athletes across 36 sports associations, 560 have been shortlisted to represent Melaka in Selangor. The state finished 12th out of 15 contingents in the previous games, with a total medal count of 18 gold, 22 silver, and 30 bronze.
