An investigation by the social media platform X has revealed a coordinated effort involving approximately 200 suspected Chinese bot accounts attempting to shape American public discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and energy policies. This operation highlights China's attempts to influence U.S. public opinion amid the intensifying AI competition between the two nations.

X's security team identified these accounts as part of a larger network of 200,000 suspected influence operations originating from China. The specific posts from these 200 accounts focused on the energy consumption of AI, rising utility costs, and depicted data center operators as accumulating wealth at the public's expense. It remains unclear if X has taken action to block or remove these accounts.

This discovery echoes findings from a June report by OpenAI, which suggested that Chinese actors might have used its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to generate content aimed at manipulating the U.S. debate surrounding AI data centers and related policies. The alleged Chinese influence campaign underscores concerns about foreign interference in critical technological and policy discussions within the United States.

Republican Senator Mark McCormick commented on the situation, stating that the Chinese Communist Party recognizes the importance of AI dominance for the future and seeks to divide the U.S. to hinder its progress in the AI race.
