Xi Jinping Directs Response to Nepal-China Border Disaster

Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed a high-level response to a devastating glacial collapse that triggered massive floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border on August 26. The Chinese leader chaired a Politburo meeting on August 28 to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.

Xi Jinping instructed Premier Li Qiang to travel to the disaster zone. Li Qiang is tasked with visiting affected communities, offering condolences to survivors, and overseeing the emergency response and recovery operations. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has also been dispatched to the site to guide the efforts.

The meeting acknowledged the extreme challenges in the rescue operations due to the high-altitude, steep terrain, volatile weather, and the presence of glaciers, glacial lakes, and ongoing geological hazards. Authorities are prioritizing the search for both domestic and foreign nationals who are missing.

According to Nepalese police data, 469 bodies have been recovered, and the number of missing persons has risen to 977. Chinese authorities had previously reported 3 fatalities and 558 missing individuals from the disaster, though these figures have not yet been updated.

The disaster occurred in a remote, high-altitude region characterized by steep valleys and unpredictable weather, complicating rescue efforts. The ongoing presence of glacial ice and potential for further geological instability pose significant risks to those involved in the relief operations.
