Yankees Rookies Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Homer as Angels Fall to 9 Losses in 11 Games

Spencer Jones opened the game with a two-run homer, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with another home run as the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 on the road.

Jones, a 25-year-old Yankees prospect, hit his ninth homer of the season in the first inning and finished with three RBIs. Chisholm’s solo shot was his 19th homer of the year, giving New York three runs in the opening frame. The Yankees added another run in the fourth.

Los Angeles reduced the deficit in the third inning when Wade Meckler delivered an RBI single. Christian Moore’s two-run triple in the sixth brought the Angels within one run, but New York pulled away late. Trent Grisham’s RBI single and Paul Goldschmidt’s sacrifice fly added insurance in the eighth, before Jones drove in another run with a key single in the ninth.

Gerrit Cole started for New York and worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and three runs. He struck out five, walked one and earned his eighth win, leaving him with a 3.29 earned-run average. Brent Headrick and Paul Blackburn each pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, while John Schreiber closed out the victory with a scoreless inning.

Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez allowed four runs over six innings and took his sixth loss. His ERA rose to 6.03. Los Angeles has now lost nine of its last 11 games and stands at 53-86, tied with the Athletics for the American League’s worst record. New York remains second in the AL East and first in the AL wild-card race.
