Yayoi Kusama, Artist and Fashion Icon, Dies at 97

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, an internationally acclaimed figure whose distinctive polka dot motifs became synonymous with avant-garde art and high fashion, has died at the age of 97. Kusama passed away on August 14 in a Tokyo hospital due to multiple organ failure.

Kusama's influence transcended the art world, making a significant mark on the fashion industry. Her work with major brands like XLARGE, X-girl, and PORTER, as well as her designs for G-SHOCK watches, showcased the versatility of her artistic vision.

However, her collaborations with the French luxury house Louis Vuitton (LV) are particularly iconic. The first partnership in 2012 saw her "infinite dots" pattern adorn everyday luxury items, igniting a global polka dot craze. A decade later, LV revisited the collaboration in late 2022 and early 2023, launching an even larger collection. Kusama personally designed each dot, with LV meticulously ensuring precise placement and texture on classic bags like the Speedy and Neverfull, as well as on menswear, womenswear, shoes, accessories, and even perfumes.

Beyond her high-profile work with LV, Kusama's signature dots and avant-garde style permeated various levels of fashion and lifestyle brands. Her influence was evident from high-end champagne, such as Veuve Clicquot's La Grande Dame 2012 vintage champagne, to streetwear, demonstrating a pervasive impact across diverse markets.
