Yellow Alert Issued for Extreme Cold and Strong Winds Across Argentina on Sunday

A sharp fall in temperatures across the Buenos Aires metropolitan area has prompted Argentina's National Meteorological Service to issue yellow alerts for extreme cold and strong winds on Sunday, September 6. The warnings affect Buenos Aires city and 15 provinces.

The extreme-cold alert covers Buenos Aires city, Buenos Aires province, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, central Santa Fe, southern Córdoba, San Luis, Mendoza, northwestern Neuquén and La Pampa. The service said the cold could have a mild to moderate effect on health and warned that it may be dangerous for children, people over 65 and those with chronic illnesses.

Authorities advised people to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors and to wear several light layers if they go outside. They also recommended heating homes safely, avoiding sudden temperature changes and paying particular attention to children, pregnant women, older people and those with chronic conditions.

A separate yellow wind alert covers western Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca and La Rioja, along with parts of northwestern Tucumán and Neuquén. In mountain areas, westerly winds could reach 50 to 70 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour at higher elevations. Residents were told to secure objects that could be blown away, stay away from doors and windows, avoid sheltering under signs, trees or utility poles, and take care while driving.

Central Jujuy also faces a yellow alert for Zonda winds, which could reach 30 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts above 70. The conditions may reduce visibility, raise temperatures suddenly and bring very dry air. The service advised residents to stay indoors, close doors and windows, drink water, protect their eyes and nose from dust, and avoid lighting fires. In Buenos Aires city, the forecast calls for a low of 3°C and a high of 10°C, with partly cloudy conditions and winds of up to 22 kilometers per hour through the afternoon.
