Yellow Alert Issued for Extreme Cold, Snow, and Wind Across 11 Argentine Provinces

Argentina is bracing for severe weather as the National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued yellow alerts for extreme cold, snowfall, and strong winds affecting 11 provinces on Monday, August 10. This level of alert signifies a potential for weather phenomena that could cause damage and temporarily disrupt daily life.

The extreme cold warning covers Buenos Aires city and various parts of Buenos Aires province, as well as sections of Corrientes, Córdoba, San Luis, La Pampa, La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza, Neuquén, and Chubut. The SMN emphasizes that these temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

In response to the cold alert, the SMN advises people to avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors and to wear multiple layers of clothing if they must go out. Staying active to generate body heat, maintaining safe home heating, drinking plenty of fluids, and closely monitoring vulnerable individuals are also recommended.

Additionally, yellow alerts for snowfall are in effect for parts of Mendoza and Neuquén, where persistent snow accumulation of 15 to 25 centimeters is expected, possibly exceeding these amounts in some areas. A yellow alert for winds, with speeds of 40-60 km/h and gusts up to 90 km/h, is also active for Neuquén. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, close windows, and stay away from them, as well as avoid seeking shelter under unstable structures.
